Due 12/7: Butterflies, Personal Narrative, and Class Forum

1. Butterflies–Read and annotate up to p. 185. Quiz on Thursday.

2. Personal Narrative–As soon as I am told of our exam day, I can tell you the due date for your narrative. At this point all I can tell you is that it is due at the earliest on 12/14. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the rubric below.

3. Class Forum–Post your paragraph as a response to this thread (scroll to the bottom of the thread). Post it as it was written in class. I am interested in hearing from a pairing that had some disparity in scoring. We will use your paragraph in class to “talk it out.” So, any volunteers?

Due 9/14: Class Forum

Hello folks! The first week is almost in the books. If all goes as planned, I will see you on Monday and this class really begins! It is imperative that you have taken care of all responsibilities by then. This includes:

  • Registered for the website
  • Posted a response in the Welcome thread on the class forum
  • Completed the in-class essay
  • Read the course syllabus
  • You should have supplies for the class

Tomorrow, you will do the following:

Day 5: Existentialism is a Humanism Discussion

Please be sure to have a printed copy of your forum response in front of you. During this period, discuss each of the four reproaches and Sartre’s response to those reproaches. DO NOT get into a critical discussion until you think you have great control of his argument. Leave your printed response with the Sub at the end of class.

HW: Class Forum–Remember you must post by midnight before the next class period (in preparation for Thursday’s class)! AND REMEMBER TO BRING A PRINTED COPY OF YOUR RESPONSE IN TO CLASS. The responses should be added to the reading response section of your binder. Be sure to include the heading and title each printed response.

Due 5/15: Class Forum and Steppenwolf

1. Class Forum
2. Steppenwolf–Read and annotate up to p. 74 (stop with “Passing by the Library…”)
3. PBA Guidelines

Due 5/10 (5/11 for 10B): Class Forum

1. Class Forum
2. Finish the play for Thursday (10H) or Friday (10B).

Due 5/3: Class Forum and More

1. (Due 5/3) Thus Spoke Zarathustra–Read and annotate this excerpt from Nietzsche’s Zarathustra. The reading is located in the packet.
2. (Due 5/3) Carl Jung–Hermann Hesse’s Steppenwolf is the manifestation of Jungian influence (among other things), so it is imperative that you be familiar with Carl Jung. Research Carl Jung focusing on (but not limiting yourself to) the following: collective unconscious, anima/animus, mother archetype, shadow, complex, ego, self, persona. Additionally, research Carl Jung’s influence on Hermann Hesse. You must take notes in your binder (2 pages). As we read Steppenwolf, you will be expected to make connections to Carl Jung. Here is a good starting point. Let me stress, developing control of Jung is not optional; you are expected to develop control and demonstrate that control when discussing and writing about Steppenwolf.
3. (First reading due 5/4) Steppenwolf–If you can, please purchase your own copy. It’s a text that you will want to own (I think). Try and pick it up this weekend!
