HW due 10/6: Poetry Explication

Tonight, print and read through this handout on poetry explications. In order for us to move even more into the “heart” we must have control of the “mind.” This involved understanding poetry explications, so read closely.

Also, if you and your group have a school of poetry that you would like to explore (I am not guaranteeing that you will be able to), let me know tomorrow.

HW due 10/6: The Precis

This week we will write our first précis. This requires that you have at least Control of the source article. In this case, our source is That Individual. Print out and read the précis detail sheet TONIGHT. Then, outline (in your notebook) the most important points raised in That Individual.

HW due 10/6: Class Forum

Class Forum–Post in the proper forum. If you are in A Band, post in the A band class forum. Also, DO NOT start a new thread. Post your response in the thread that I have already started (i.e. #4: The Minister’s Black Veil).

HW due 10/5: The Minister’s Black Veil

Due 10/5: The Minister’s Black Veil by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Read and annotate. Remember, a point of focus for this is annotating. What do we annotate and why. Also, research and take notes on our author. Know that when I collect binders, I expect to see the author notes in your binders (notes section).

HW due 10/5: Villanelle and Wordsworth

1. Villanelle–Remember, this is a fixed form poem! It should be typed. Title is optional. You must closely follow the form requirements of the villanelle. Including:

  • 19 lines of verse (5 tercets and 1 quatrain)
  • Rhyme scheme
  • Set number of syllables/beats per line (you choose a number and stick to it)
  • Don’t forget the refrains! The fist and third line of verse repeat throughout and follow a specific pattern.

Use proper heading:

Sean Leon (your name of course)
Poetry Seminar
10/5/15
#1: Villanelle

2. (Also Due 10/5!) Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey by William Wordsworth. As for annotating focus, ignore form and pay all of your attention to discerning meaning/theme.
