Existential NYC, A Photo Narrative–For this creative group project you must work with your group and with your group’s theme (i.e. alienation and absurdity, faith and existentialism, etc.) Capture an image (no larger than 8×10) that reflects your theme! Keep in mind that this is a photo narrative, so each group member should capture an image of our subject (NYC) for a total of 4 or 5 images (depending on how many members are in your group). The series of images should work in concert to tell a story (again, a story that is connected to your theme). Each image should include a pithy existential narrative no more than 50 words in length (preferably closer to 30). If you think of all that we have read and discussed thus far and consider the scope of your theme, you can really get funky with this assignment! Think of how you can use the city in the image. Think of how you can use people in the assignment (although you don’t necessarily have to use people in the assignment). Your image must capture the essence of your group’s theme! Post production is fine! The color of absence of color in the image is completely up to you. All creative decisions are yours! Just capture Existential NYC! The final submission will be scored based upon creative ingenuity and thematic relevance! DUE NOVEMBER 8!

1. Nausea–Read the first 27 pages. Read up to the entry marked, “Thursday, 11:30.” There will be a quiz to begin class. This will be one of the longer readings from this text so be prepared…

3. Group Presentations–ALL groups should have a schedule in place. ALL sources have to be cleared with me. Again, ALL sources must be cleared with me. Review the rubric closely to ensure success. If you have précis questions, you should talk to me in the new week.
4. The Stranger–12F, I am collecting your copies of The Stranger on Monday to grade annotations, so have that ready to go on Monday.
HW10 due 10/21 (10/22 for 10G): The Bell Jar
1. The Bell Jar–Complete the text. This week your annotations will be collected and graded.

4. Personal Vocab: You should now have 20 words in your personal vocab section! By the end of next week, you should have 25. Remember, vocab sections should not be typed.

HW12 due 10/17: Jean Paul Sartre
1. Jean Paul Sartre–Print out and read the following sections on Sartre’s philosophy: Ontology, Psychology, and Ethics. Among other things pay particular attention to the Being-in-itself and Being-for-itself. We begin Nausea at the end of this week. This novel is quite challenging to wrap your head around and simply cannot be understood without understanding the concepts above. Further, revisit Schopenhauer’s The World as Will and specifically the concepts of will and representation. I expect you to have both printouts in hand on Thursday; if you don’t, don’t bother coming to class as the class will be based almost entirely on these readings.
2. Nausea–once again, if you can secure a copy of Nausea by the end of the week, please do so.
HW10 due 10/17: The Bell Jar
1. The Bell Jar–Read and annotate Chapters 15 and 16. Be sure your annotations focus on sections of the novel that you would like to share with the class during class discussion. As always, I am most interested in why you think your chosen sections are critical.
2. UNC Conclusions–Be sure to print out and read the printout on conclusions. You should have this in class on Thursday.
3. Class vocab list–You simply have to print this out for Thursday.
4. You should have 20 Vocab Words in your personal vocab section by the end of this week.
