HW12 due 10/28: Nausea

1. Nausea–Read and annotate up to page 81.
2. Complete the group homework. The thread will be started on Goodreads as soon as I get the prompt from the presenting groups.
3. Existential NYC, A Photo Narrative–For this creative group project you must work with your group and with your group’s theme (i.e. alienation and absurdity, faith and existentialism, etc.)  Capture an image (no larger than 8×10) that reflects your theme!  Keep in mind that this is a photo narrative, so each group member should capture an image of our subject (NYC) for a total of 4 or 5 images (depending on how many members are in your group). The series of images should work in concert to tell a story (again, a story that is connected to your theme).  Each image should include a pithy existential narrative no more than 50 words in length (preferably closer to 30). If you think of all that we have read and discussed thus far and consider the scope of your theme, you can really get funky with this assignment!  Think of how you can use the city in the image.  Think of how you can use people in the assignment (although you don’t necessarily have to use people in the assignment). Your image must capture the essence of your group’s theme!  Post production is fine! The color of absence of color in the image is completely up to you.  All creative decisions are yours!  Just capture Existential NYC!  The final submission will be scored based upon creative ingenuity and thematic relevance! DUE NOVEMBER 8!
4. Group Presentations

HW10 due 10/24 (10/25 for 10G): Orwell Examples

1. Politics and the English Language(PEL)–Tomorrow, be prepared to thoroughly explore how Orwell develops his thesis. I expect to see you illustrate control of Orwell’s argument. There will be no small-group preparation; we will begin and end in whole group discussion. I cannot stress enough…you must keep in the fore of your mind the historical context from which PEL and 1984 were born.  In many ways, both texts serve as a response to the socio-economic-political situation of WWII Europe–a situation wherein people by the millions were disenfranchised, impoverished, and killed.  Accordingly, Orwell is considered to be one of the most influential figures of the 20th Century because of his response(s) to that situation.  Further, as stated in class, it is critical that we UNDERSTAND Orwell’s position. So, read not to contradict and confute, but to weigh and consider.

Tonight, you must find a source illustrating one of Orwell’s points in PEL. The source might be a newspaper article, a political speech, etc.  Then, in your binder, discuss the piece (At least one fully developed paragraph) and how it illustrates Orwell’s argument. Do not “wing” this…I expect to see an organized, thoughtful discussion of your source as you identify how it reflects Orwell’s issue(s) with political writing. Most importantly perhaps, I want you to understand that Orwell’s message with respect to Politics and Language is relevant today.
