HW12 due 11/7: Nausea Thesis and Extra Credit

1. Thesis–Your Nausea thesis must be posted by midnight tonight. You will be able to revise this thesis as we move ahead.
2. EXTRA CREDIT! This is a creative VISUAL extra credit assignment.  This image or series of images should tell a story (a story that is connected to one of the themes below).  Each image should include a pithy existential narrative no more than 50 words in length (preferably closer to 30). YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ATTACH THIS “BLURB” TO THE IMAGE ITSELF.  This existential narrative should not be a description of your project; rather, it should be a written creative expression of your visual. Think of it as a brief fictional narrative capturing the essence of your creative piece.

If you think of all that we have read and discussed thus far and consider the scope of your theme, you can really get funky with this assignment!   Your visual must capture the essence of your theme!  The color of absence of color in the image is completely up to you.  All creative decisions are yours!  Just capture one of the existential themes below!  Feel free to connect your visual to a text read thus far in the term if you would like. The final submission will be scored based upon creative ingenuity and thematic relevance! Here you will see a sampling of past creative visuals submitted for this course. DUE NOVEMBER TOMORROW!

HW12 due 11/15: Nausea

1. In your notebook (one page) I want you to discuss Antoine’s conversation with Anny (pp. 135-154). Why is this conversation here at this point in the novel? What is Sartre doing through this exchange? Be prepared for tomorrow’s concluding discussion and we can put this novel to rest.
2. Existential NYC, A Photo Narrative–Project is due tomorrow! Be sure you have your images mounted along with your existential narrative blurbs.
3. Goodreads (Due by midnight Sunday)

HW12 due 11/14: Nausea and More…

Ok, folks so by our next class (considering we have group presentations at the beginning of the new week), we will be a few days removed from our last Nausea discussion, so pay close attention to the focus points below.
1. Nausea–complete the novel! Don’t fret! Between now and the next time we meet to discuss this novel, almost a week will have passed so you have time. Be prepared to discuss:

  • The epiphany by the chestnut tree (including veneers, being in the way, CONTINGENCY, roots) pp. 126-133
  • Anny (including change and outliving oneself) pp. 137-144
  • Tuesday in Bouville (including being free, outliving myself) pp.156-160
  • The end (Some of These Days) pp. 173-178 [Read more…]

HW12 due 10/28: Nausea

1. Nausea–Read and annotate up to page 81.
2. Complete the group homework. The thread will be started on Goodreads as soon as I get the prompt from the presenting groups.
3. Existential NYC, A Photo Narrative–For this creative group project you must work with your group and with your group’s theme (i.e. alienation and absurdity, faith and existentialism, etc.)  Capture an image (no larger than 8×10) that reflects your theme!  Keep in mind that this is a photo narrative, so each group member should capture an image of our subject (NYC) for a total of 4 or 5 images (depending on how many members are in your group). The series of images should work in concert to tell a story (again, a story that is connected to your theme).  Each image should include a pithy existential narrative no more than 50 words in length (preferably closer to 30). If you think of all that we have read and discussed thus far and consider the scope of your theme, you can really get funky with this assignment!  Think of how you can use the city in the image.  Think of how you can use people in the assignment (although you don’t necessarily have to use people in the assignment). Your image must capture the essence of your group’s theme!  Post production is fine! The color of absence of color in the image is completely up to you.  All creative decisions are yours!  Just capture Existential NYC!  The final submission will be scored based upon creative ingenuity and thematic relevance! DUE NOVEMBER 8!
